Proactive Relaxation

Shona Schmall - Friday, March 03, 2017

What if keeping yourself healthy was as simple as relaxing? Many studies have shown that relaxing can lead to a better memory, improved immune system, and healthier heart. But, to clarify, “relaxing” doesn’t mean sitting on the couch all day. There are some incredible ways to strengthen your body without the intense workouts that most people imagine. It’s more “proactive relaxing.” Three of the best ways to do this are yoga, walking, and meditation.

People everywhere have their own ideas about what yoga is and whether it is something they want to try. Don’t let stereotypes confuse you. Merriam Webster defines yoga as, “a system of exercises for attaining bodily or mental control and well-being.” Yoga is a great way to relax your body while also building strength. What better combination is there? Check out this website for some easy yoga poses that are made to facilitate relaxation: https://www.yogaoutlet.com/guides/relaxing-yoga-poses-for-beginners.

When was the last time you went for a nice walk? It seems so simple; we often disregard it as ineffective. But Arthritis.org lists over a dozen benefits of walking including better sleep, weight loss, and less joint pain. Walking is made exponentially better when paired with great weather. Find a nice park, a new book, or a conversational friend, and walking won’t feel like an exercise at all!

Lastly, meditation. Similar to walking, everyone knows of meditation but few reap the benefits it can have. Meditation has many forms, some as simple as sitting for two minutes or being attentive to your breathing. You don’t need to purchase anything or go anywhere; meditation is wherever you are. It’s simple, calming, and incredibly effective.

There are so many ways to stay healthy, relaxed, and stress-free no matter where you are, what time it is, or what the weather is like! Take advantage of these three proactive relaxation techniques and you will see the benefits in no time.
