Age is an Attitude

Shona Schmall - Monday, March 20, 2017

You’ve heard “age is just a number,” but have you thought about how true that really is? Don’t let a number define what you can do. If you feel like there are things you can’t do because of your age, just look at these four examples of seniors who prove that age is an attitude.

  1. There is a group of seniors in London learning how to “parkour.” Parkour is a sport of moving from one place to another, often jumping across buildings or climbing walls. This sport is high-intensity and often dangerous. A group of trained coaches lead the seniors in stretches and tutorials on how to do the sport. At one time, the oldest member was 85 years old! 2. Georgina Harwood celebrated her 100th birthday in 2015 by going skydiving! It wasn’t her first time going skydiving either, but she was 92 the first time she did it. She was joined by family and friends in her unique birthday celebration, and described it as a positive experience! Check out the video here: http://bit.ly/1baJVkR
  3. Maybe extreme sports aren’t for you. Our third example comes from Henley Wood Retirement Village in England. Every year, the residents here dress up and recreate their favorite movie posters. The final result is turned into a calendar which is then sold to raise funds for charity. Most young people don’t even think of such creative and kind ideas as this one! 4. These seniors took one of the most popular songs from recent years, “Uptown Funk,” and recreated it as an “oldtown cover.” The final result is this music video on YouTube: http://bit.ly/2mQlAbf. You can’t help but smile while watching this video, and you know that making it had to be so much fun!

After seeing these examples, it is obvious that anything young folks can do, seniors can do better. Age is an attitude; don’t let a number define what you can and can’t do. Now, what is it you’ve always wanted to try? Get out there and give it a shot!
