3 Signs It's Time to Downsize

Shona Schmall - Friday, April 28, 2017

Making the choice to downsize can be a complicated decision, and for that reason, many people can end up ignoring the signs that they should downsize. In many cases, downsizing can be the best decision for life and/or finances, so it is important to be aware of the signs that you should downsize! For starters, read this list of the three main signs that you might be ready to downsize.

The first sign that you might be ready to downsize is that your home maintenance is getting to be too much. This could be seen financially if you are spending more money than you wish on hiring maintenance help. Or it could be seen physically if you are consistently putting your body to work as you fix various things around your house. If you make the choice to downsize, your smaller home will have less of a need for maintenance. Additionally, many locations, like Vintage Cooperatives, have a hassle-free work order process to have your maintenance done for you.

The second sign that it’s time to downsize is that your current location has a lot of unused space. Often times this is seen in the form of empty bedrooms. As children grow up and move out, we end up with a lot of space that we are paying to keep, but aren’t using at all. In many cases there are memories tied to these rooms, which makes them hard to leave. But in the end, making the choice to downsize will be more efficient for maintenance, cleaning, and finances.

The third and final sign that you are ready to downsize is if your living expenses have become too much. This can be seen in many areas, including maintenance, house payments, taxes, and home utilities. If you are retired, you do not want to be spending money on things that are no longer needed. The option of downsizing could significantly decrease the costs associated with your living location.

Obviously, downsizing is a complicated and tough decision to make, but there does come a point when it could be the best decision for you! Consider learning about the smaller living areas in your community to learn if it could be right for you.
